1920-2003 (polularly known as Babalawo Fabunmi)

Chief Oluwo FABUNMI SOWUNMI

Our spiritual father, the godfather of our community, our master, directing, spiritual guardian, the spiritual ancestor of all those which have received the temple dedicated to Oduduwa.

Born into a traditional family is supremo Baba Fabunmi Sowunmi, his study of  Ifa began at the age of 6 years from his father, he was later taught by another Ifa Priest Babalawo Ashejire after the death of his father. He spent 18 years as an apprentice learning Ifa. His study was perfected by 30 years, before he began to practice alone as a priest of Ifa - Babalawo. The IFA is dedicated to more than 10,000 people in Nigeria and over 50,000 worldwide. In 1989, a traditional Afro-Brazilian Babalawo returned source community knowledge - the system of practising Ifa, which had lost to Brazil. He is a distinguished member of Ogboni community and had knowledge of the other Orisha, he was a healer and a specialist in traditional medicine amongst The Yoruba. He announced that the Slovenian group are important in Europe. He died at the age of 83 years, in 2003. Chief Opeki Fabunmi Sowunmi was highly respected in the Afro-Brazilian community worldwide and he would ever be remembered.
Until his death, he was a visiting Lecturer at some notable Universities across the South America. He was the Baale of Abule Ake (Egba Obafemi/Owode Local Government)

 

Oluwo Opeki Fabunmi Sowunmi was famous particularly in the South America i.e. Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and also in Europe i.e. Spain, Portugal  and the UK.

He was well known as a visiting Senior Lecturer in the South American Universities where he taught African studies i.e. Ifa and Orisa. Chief Opeki Fabunmi Sowunmi has over 50000 initiates to his name and he was an author of many books, and Journals like  Guia, viajou para o Orun (1). Journalll de Umbanda e Candomblé, São Paulo, p. B-4 - B-4, 12 maio 2003. copies can be found at University of Sao Paulo Library.

 

 Until his death, Chief Opeki Fabunmi Sowunmi was a researcher at the University Paulista and Collaborative teacher at the University of Sao Paulo, acting on the following topics: Etchnopsychology, African Heritage, Culture and Yoruba Religion, Psychology and Religion, Interreligious Dialogue, Social Responsibility, Training of Psychologists, Education, Values and Virtures, an appointment he undertook as a visiting Lecturer.

(Greeting the Spirit of Destiny in the Morning)

Olodumare, mo ji loni. Mo wo'gun merin aye.
Creator, I greet the new day. I greet the four directions that create the world.

Ifa brings us Spirit, the Divine Messenger brings us Spirit. We praise their blessings.
Ki ola san mi t'aya t'omo t'ibi t'ire lo nrin papo ni'ile aye. Wa jeki aye mi. Kioye mi. Ase.
We praise the blessings of family and children as well as the creation and destruction that occurs in all corners of the world. They are the blessings of the world, they are my blessings. May it be so.
